1-2-1 English Tuition

  • Initial Consultation

Meet for an informal consultation to discuss your child's base knowledge, requirements and expectations, and how we can make the sessions work best for you.

  • Before The Session

Each session is meticulously planned so that your child makes progress EACH SESSION. This is achieved by identifying areas in which they need to improve, and planning interesting sessions to engage and motivate them.

  • During The Session

Sessions are delivered in a supportive and comfortable environment in a way that best suits your child's learning style.

KS3 ENGLISH TUITION

Is your child not making expected progress? Do they struggle with understanding texts or formulating a coherent response? Or do they have issues with spelling, punctuation and grammar?

The new GCSE Specification means that SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) is more important than ever, and leaving KS3 without a firm grasp on this will have a substantial impact on future performance. I offer creative, personalised sessions to engage and ultimately reward your child as they make noticeable progress.

GCSE ENGLISH TUITION

Is your child overwhelmed at the thought of taking their GCSEs? Do they struggle with analysing their set texts or are their controlled assessments looming? Do they need help reinforcing what they have learnt in school or challenging further?

I have experience teaching to WJEC, AQA and OCR exam boards, and am currently tutoring GCSE students following all three specifications, which keeps me on my toes!  I teach interesting, creative sessions to challenge your child to reach their full potential.

SKYPE TUITION

No matter where you are in the world, I am now able to offer Skype tuition sessions for KS3, GCSE and A-Level students.  I have found this to be a very affordable way for students (particularly in more expensive parts of the country) to access high quality 1-2-1 English tuition through an often familiar, thus more comfortable, technological platform.

WHERE?

All face-to-face sessions take place at my home in Headingley, Leeds.  If you’d rather your child worked from the comfort of your own home, get in touch to ask.  I now also offer 1-2-1 Skype sessions, so you can reach your potential no matter where you are in the world!

About Suzanne

  • Suzanne Hughes
    Suzanne Hughes Private English Tutor

I am a fully qualified English Secondary School Teacher with 7 years of experience, specialising in teaching KS3 and GCSE students in a ‘Good’ school in Wakefield and an ‘Outstanding’ school in Leeds. I have recently moved back into the area after spending the last year living in North Wales so that I could be closer to my family. It was here that I set up my tuition business, and I am excited to emulate its success back in Leeds.

I am extremely passionate about my subject, and I convey this through innovative, challenging lessons that will keep students interested and motivated. I believe the key to engaging all students is to get to know their likes and dislikes, and plan accordingly (meaning I probably spend as long planning my sessions as I do teaching them!)

I am dedicated to helping children achieve their absolute potential and the look on a student’s face when they ‘get it’ is why I continue to do what I do. I love creating sessions that will challenge students, and whilst I can’t say I ‘love’ marking, I have led whole school training sessions on effective marking and I certainly love the effects that effective marking has on a student’s progress. My sessions will be a combination of all of these factors – individual planning, interesting sessions and effective marking – that will ultimately result in your child’s progress.

    What qualifications do you have?

I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BA (Hons) English Language with Linguistics in 2007 and went on to secure my PGCE in Secondary English from Leeds Trinity University in 2009. Throughout my career I have regularly taken training on a variety of subjects, from Child Protection and Health and Safety to all the latest teaching initiatives.

I also hold an up-to-date DBS. All my certificates are available to view on request.

    What experience do you have?

I qualified as an English Teacher specialising in ages 11-18 from Leeds Trinity University in 2009. My first training school, a fantastic school in Wakefield, offered me my first teaching position whilst I was still training and I undertook this position in June 2009. I worked as a Teacher of English in Wakefield for 4 years and was promoted to Head of House in my second year. I then worked as a Teacher of English at an ‘Outstanding’ school in Leeds – a school nationally renowned for its outstanding practises and where teachers from all over the country come to observe and train.

I specialise in students at KS3 and GCSE level and have been responsible for top sets with targets such as KS3 Level 8 or GCSE A* as well as lower sets where students have been set targets of D’s and E’s (although I have re-set more aspirational targets of C’s which many students have attained). Although the new (9-1) GCSE Specifications follow a levelling structure as opposed to the old A*-G Grading system, I am fully up-to-date in all changes. I have demonstrated good or outstanding levels of progress in all of my groups.

Most recently, I have set up my own private tuition business which has been extremely successful. I have been fully booked for the last year and have received some excellent testimonials from my clients. It has been an absolute joy to watch these students flourish, and I eagerly await their examination results at the end of August.

I also became a WJEC Examiners for GCSE English Literature this year. This was an excellent opportunity for me, as the high quality training gave me a firm grasp on exactly how the scripts are marked and what examiners are looking for in this exam. I received fantastic feedback about the quality of my work, and I will be returning again next summer.

ENGLISH TUITION FAQs

These are my frequently asked questions.  If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, please feel free to contact me.

WHO ARE THE SESSIONS FOR?

I specialise in KS3 and GCSE students, but can adapt my educational program to suit all ages and levels of learners.

WHAT DO WE DO IN THE SESSIONS?

Sessions are planned and delivered to suit the individual learning style and needs of the student.  Read more on this process.

WHERE DO THE SESSIONS TAKE PLACE

All sessions take place at my home in Headingley, Leeds.  Alternatively, we can arrange for sessions to take place from the comfort of your own home but there may be a small charge depending on area.  Contact me for more details.

WHEN DO THE SESSIONS TAKE PLACE?

Sessions are arranged in advance for a mutually agreeable time and date. My working hours are Monday, Tuesday and Friday 5.30pm-8.30pm, and Friday 4.30pm-7.30pm, and weekend sessions available upon request [all availability depends on other clients]. It is advisable to book at least a week in advance and, once a suitable day and time is determined, keep this as a recurring appointment.

HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS?

That is up to you. I offer 1 hour, 90 minutes or 2 hour sessions. I would not recommend longer than 1 hour sessions for 1-2-1 KS3 students, but longer times can be particularly useful for groups or GCSE students needing intensive sessions.

WHY SHOULD I EMPLOY A TUTOR?

As the tutor is working with your child in a more focused way than would be possible in a class of 30 children, a lot can be achieved in a short time. There are many reasons why a tutor may benefit your child.

If your child is not making expected progress or if their confidence is slipping, a tutor can work with them in a supportive and focused environment to give them a boost and get them back on track.

If your child needs to improve their grades to pass a forthcoming exam, such as an entrance exam or GCSE’s, the tutor can plan and deliver tailored lessons suited to the individual to ensure they make noticeable progress. They can also spend more time giving individual feedback and helping students understand the assessment criteria – aspects of teaching that teachers in mainstream classes just don’t have the time to do in as much detail as a tutor does.

If your child has an exceptional ability in English or you feel they need stretching and challenging further, a tutor can work with them to ensure their needs are met.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY 1-2-1 TUTORING?

1-2-1 tutoring means sessions will be planned for one individual’s needs and sessions will be undertaken between one student and one tutor. This means the student gets the full attention of the tutor and as such, progress is made much more rapidly than if the student was sharing the teacher with a group of 30, as in most secondary schools today.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY SMALL GROUP TUTORING?

Small Group tutoring means that sessions can take place with one tutor and either 2, 3 or 4 students.

I have demonstrated good or outstanding levels of progress in all of my groups.

DO YOU HAVE A CANCELLATION POLICY?

I ask that if you need to cancel a session, you give as much notice as possible so that your appointment time may be given to somebody else. However, as a mother myself, I know that this isn’t always possible and unforeseen circumstances such as illness do occasionally arise. I operate a 48 hour policy, meaning that if you cancel a session less than 48 hours before the session is due to take place, I would expect that session to be rearranged as soon as possible or for it to be paid for in full.

WHAT METHODS OF PAYMENT DO YOU TAKE?

I accept cash in advance or at the time of the session, or you can pay by BACs or with a debit or credit card via PayPal.

DO YOU OFFER BLOCK BOOKING DISCOUNTS?

Yes, we offer a 10% block booking discount for a block of 10 sessions. Other block booking options are available – if you have an idea about how many sessions you want and the format you want them in, then just ask and we can come up with a pricing plan.

DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTS FOR SIBLINGS

Yes, we offer a 10% sibling discount, although this can’t be used in conjunction with block booking discounts.

WHY IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE TO HAVE MORE STUDENTS?

You are not just paying for the cost of the session – you are also paying for all the time spent planning and preparing for the session and the time spent marking work. The number of students in a group drastically impacts the amount of planning and preparation time needed, as all sessions are planned to ensure EACH STUDENT makes progress EACH SESSION.
